Japanese Wedding 10/2002
I got some interesting shots (well, at least I like them (^-^)) at Meiji Shrine. We had gone there to enjoy a walk in the forests of Tokyo, and happened upon this very traditional (and probably very expensive) wedding procession. There were lots of shutter-snapping rubberneckers, so I did not feel so guilty about mingling with the lens-monocled crowd. The bride is the one dressed in white, and I surmise that the groom is the fellow walking next to her. Ladies dressed in formal black kimonos are guests and family members.
Hey Scott, see the Docomo Building?
The bride wears a big hat to hide her "horns of jealosy."
See? This is what a jealous or angry wife looks like.

Horns of jealousy...interesting. Never knew that this before.
Do they really call them "horns of jealousy?" Is that code for her adorned hair that is cone shaped on both sides or something? I wonder why the man has to wear a kimono and why no one is smiling. Very somber. Her feet look tiny, too. Thanks for sharing this with us!
@SoOffBase - If people are angry here, it it imagined that they have horns like a devil.
Beautiful photos. I have seen similar in some movies I think and the dress was awesome then and still is, seeing your photos. Beautiful,
@PhotoGraphics - Thanks! I just like to share what I see here and there.
This was really nice.
what beautiful outfits.
I've been there and even saw a wedding too.
Nice entry!
beautiful pictures, but I can't imagine a wedding ceremony where no one smiles! lol (I hope mine is less somber!)
Have a great weekend!
Very nice pictures!! The ceremonial clothes are beautiful, but different!
So what kind of horns does the groom wear?
@Yogi616 - The groom is supposed to be faithful so his wife doesn't have to get jealous.
Is that realistic? Just goes to show the difference between the two cultures. Here the man is frequently jealous but is also more often the unfaithful one.
@Yogi616 - Realistic or not I don't know. I am just documenting a tradition.
Interesting pics. I find the Japanese obsession with ceremony fascinating. Going to China in September – first time in the Far East and I'm looking forward to it.
Beautiful shots!
@Timages - Thanks, I liked the storks on the roof. That nest is really balanced!
Very nice. I like them.
Lovely photos, and a good choice for the 'weekly photo challenge'. Thank you for sharing them!
@MattBarber - Thanks for stopping by!
Very nice. Love that red umbrella!
Beautiful, but a cold kind of beauty. Maybe that is what they were going for in this. But I really enjoyed your entry.
@closethippie - I think this family must be pretty well off financially to put on such a major production. All these fancy clothes are VERY expensive and perhaps rented, and Meiji Shrine must have received a very handsome donation for perfoming the wedding. I hope the couple is living happily ever after. Here a lot of life is not about what one wants to do, but what duty requires that one do. Perhaps there is merit is performing the duty alloted.
that's really great photos
i guess becoz of the weather so they looked a bit brooding lol
