November is the month for "shichi go san" or "seven five three." When children reach the ages of three, five and seven, they are dressed up and taken to the local shrine or temple for blessing.  I would have liked to have gotten some better pictures, but since I am just a rubbernecker taking arbitrary shots of people whose acquaintance I have not made, so I have to sneak in what I can get.   These pictures were taken at Jindaiji Temple.

We went to Jindai-ji Botanical Garden (in Tokyo's outskirts) over the weekend and happened upon these families in the temple area.

The smaller girl is probably three, and had some trouble managing her fancy duds, and I caught her just as she tripped and was caught by her mommie.  What a cutie!

These rubberneckitty pictures were taken at a different place, but I don't exactly remember where, sorry.

These little girls are probably all seven years old.

Christmas is coming, people!  This camera is no longer working.  I wonder why?

  • Beautiful pics.

The fur on the little girl looks like the same one I had as a child...muff included.

So are their Geisha still practicing today??

  • @LifeNeedsProtection - There are still geisha practicing, but they are mostly in Kyoto, I think.  I did see some in Tokyo once.  I am putting up favorite pictures from the past, and I think the geisha are in there someplace, maybe at the battledore market in Asakusa.  The kids in the pictures have nothing to do with geisha.  These are just traditional fancy clothes.  Some are purchased by doting grandparents and some are rented for the occasion.

I was really grossed out and disgusted by that doctor in "Memoirs of a Geisha."  I wonder if that kind of thing is still going on?  I certainly hope not.
