The ones who have seen this before, don't tell!
Here is something from the local market, of a part thereof, at least. I wonder if anybody can identify what it might be. Properly cooked and hardened, perhaps Japanese children of old could have used them to play marbles. The pictures provide a couple of clues to the identification of this visual aid. Could this cook concoct some sushi with it? Perhaps not.
The other picture is with another food with which the object in question is sometimes compared...
Scott got it! It is indeed an eyeball of a cooked "kinmedai." This fish has huge eyes.

@bibleco - No, it is all hard and unchewable. I think it is probably the lens of the fish eye, so it is a giant super cateract. Yuck. Now some people like fish eyes with all of the gelatinous stuff involved, but I prefer to pass on it, myself.
