2003/10/1 Okamoto Taro Museum
Here are a few pictures from the Okamoto Taro Museum, in the vicinity of Minkaen in Kawasaki. Mr. O passed away a few years ago, but I remember seeing him in TV commercials yelling, "Art is an explosion!" He had an expression on his face which would lead one to believe that he was a psycho nut case, and perhaps to some degree he was. One movie clip in the display showed him at work, and he seemed to be almost attacking the lump of clay that he was sculpting. I usually do not like modern art, but after a visit to this museum, I left with a positive feeling. Okamoto was apparently influence greatly by ancient Japanese art from the Jyomon and Yayoi periods. Although the art is abstract, the mainly pure, bright colors are somehow invigorating and rather pleasant.
Above behold some samples of ancient art. I keep looking for a flowerpot like that, but can't seem to find one.
This is a rendering of a dog.
I could not really take pictures in the museum, but found the above painting on the Internet called "Animal." Somehow it takes me back to finger painting in Kindergarten and is rather comforting. There were a few chairs that Mr. O had designed. The one in the shape of a hand was not comfortable as it did not conform well to the shape of a human undercarriage, but this particular chair was quite nice.
