  • John MacArthur makes some excellent points about evolution and why "chance" cannot be responsible for the world as it is.  One that sticks with me concerns DNA.  In order for a life form to attain greater complexity, more DNA must be added to its genetic code.  Where does a one celled organism get the DNA to form a beating heart or a spine for itself?  One might argue for mutations, but in most cases mutations are harmful and not beneficial to an organism.  We often see nature programs on NHK here that make it sound like the plants and animals designed themselves!  It just doesn't make sense.  One must suspend logic to believe it.  It takes a greater leap of faith to believe that the universe and everything in it exists with no cause than it does to believe in a Creator.

If one invests  time and energy building a relationship with God based on the work of Jesus Christ on the cross and finds out in the end God is not there, and that an eternal soul does not exist, one has lost nothing.  One returns to dust and there is nothing more to be enjoyed or feared.  But if one spends time and energy in denial of God and finds out in the end that God is indeed there and that one was indeed endowed with an eternal soul, one has lost everything.

I suppose both parties are given what they wanted.  The ones who believed in the promise of eternal life with God through Christ receive it.  The ones who denied the promises and preferred to live out of the presense of God are also granted their wish forever.  I think that is called Hell, and it is what they wanted, to be without God.  And God did not send them there, they chose it for themselves.

Such a choice breaks the heart of God.  He gave us everything, even His very life so that we could have an eternal relationship in His presence.  What more is there for him to do?  What more could He give us?  And yet He also gives us a free will and does not force Himself on us.  He allows us to choose whether or not we will respond to all that He has done.  How generous is His love.

Perhaps what those who would deny God do not realize or appreciate is that even though they say there is no God, He still grants them "common grace."  They are gifted with a world in which to dwell and a life to enjoy.  The sun rises on them every morning and causes the plants that they eat to grow.  They have fun and they laugh and marry and have children.  It is all from the loving hand and under the watchful eye of the God that they say is not there.  They spit in his face, and yet He continues to sustain their mortal lives.  How awesome is His patience.

  • I really like the fact that you brought up "common grace". I never thought about that before, and now I'm kind of dwelling on it.

The other day, though, a friend was telling me about how some scientists claim we have to be made from other things in the universe, because we're made up of a lot of the same materials in outer space (our bodies, that is) and she got to thinking about it, and suddenly it made sense to her. God created the heavens and the earth, so it'd only make sense that what He created us out of would generally have some of the same elements in them. That was one comment I'd've never thought to think about until she brought it up. *Shrug* Found it interesting, thought you might too. Sorry for the long comment! x.x
