  • November 6, 2010 Hanazono Shrine

This is Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku, not so far from where we used to live.  This particular day they are holding a "Tori no Ichi" or Decorative Rake Market.  Highly decorated bamboo rakes are bought and sold with the hopes of raking in health and wealth.  They are good for a year, so every 12 months people come to purchase new good luck charms.  They are not cheap!

Here is the shrine building, and the market is at our backs.  Let's turn around for a look!

Uh-oh, I am distracted by chocolate covered bananas.

    Year of the Rabbit decoration

The rakes are so decorated you can hardly see them!

    Waiting for customers

There are so many lucky rakes you can hardly see the vendor!

    Negotiation

Take this home and you are will have health, wealth, good luck and safe driving!
