January 8, 2012 Fuchu Okunidama Shrine

This is not a thorough report, just some pictures that I took of scenes that I thought were interesting.

Omikuji fortune papers - People tie the bad ones to the rope in hopes that their luck will change.  People also write their requests on wooden shingles and hang them on a rack.  Here are a couple of samples.

This one portrays a festival that takes place at this shrine every year, Kurayami Matsuri.

At New Years everyone gets rid of last year's charms and talismans, and pray to them in thanks.  It will all be burned later.

Some scenes from the back side of the Okunidama Shrine

Calligraphy is also done during the New Year.  Here are some kid's works on display.

It is customary to wash one's hands and rinse one's mouth before entering the shrine.

Many food booths line both sides of the path that leads into the shrine.

These are tornado cut french fries.

Thick crepes with ham, an egg and vegies

    Grilled meat on bamboo skewers

There was a small museum on the premises.  DH liked this vase.
