Ueno and British Museum Exhibit
Today's Go Somewhere is to Ueno to see the British Museum's 100 Item Exhibit. This temple is on the way to the museum and is an miniature imitation of the Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto.
This fellow is kind of creepy. His eyes look real, and his toothless mouth is stuffed full of coins. He does not look comfortable at all.
Be careful with the rope. It's an important cultural property.
Now we are at the museum, and there are a couple of very nice chess sets in the gift shop. I already have a lovely Lord of the Rings chess set, so I will be satisfied with that.
This was one of my favorite items, a ancient Jomon pot coated with gold inside and used for a tea ceremony water pot.
These chess pieces were found on an island off of Scotland, and are thought to have been carved out of walrus tusk or some such material in Scandinavia.
These are both sides of the Standard of Ur, and it was probably put on a pole and carried in parades.
The tickets were 1,600 yen each, so that means it costs 16 yen to look at each item. Pretty good!
