  • Old Hat, opinion, please! Steel or Nylon?

Why does it take a whole week to recover from Kagoshima?  Maybe I am good at moving what needs to be moved at the time, and deal with it afterwards.  I get disgusted with myself when I accomplish nothing when I want to be accomplishing something but simply cannot get myself moving.  I have so much time, yet sit around and waste it.  And those stupid neighborhood dogs still drive me crazy.  Maybe it is just that I am not a summer person who likes to function in 90 degree heat.  Yesterday was a real do nothing day, but today signs of life are returning to my smoldering brain.

I am thinking of replacing the guitar that I gave away when we moved in 2003.  I never played it and was trying to lighten up on my load of stuff.  A smaller version might be good.  But is this just a stupid itch that will go away?  It would not make sense to invest in another guitar that I would not play.  I looked around in a second hand shop yesterday and found some rubber bands stretched over cigar boxes for $30 or so, but experts Juan Carlos in Fukuoka and Shusaku in Tokyo have told me that I am not to buy any guitars without consulthing them, and they don't care for my small/cheap guitar idea.  I saw some small guitars in Kagoshima last trip for around $50, but Shusaku said that they are probably just um, pieces of caca not worth investing in.  Juan Carlos said that he is willing to teach me and another lady who comes to Bible study sometimes, but he also laughingly said that he doesn't want to listen to a student on a crummy instrument.  I will bike downtown to Tenjin today and see what the local Yamaha shop has to offer.  OK you guys, I will leave my wallet home.  Maybe.  The Yamaha shop is conveniently located across from our bank and I will have my credit card.

I think what I really want is a guitarlele, between a guitar and a ukelele, the one in the middle, Yamaha GL-1.  Later:  I went to check out the local Yamaha shop, and they have something called a junior guitar that is quite portable by bike for a decent price.  I sent Shusaku a picture of the thing and he granted permission, now I just have to discuss the matter with Juan Carlos for his approval.  The fingerboard seems a bit narrow, and I still have do decide on steel or nylon.  I think I liked the sound of the steel strings better, but nylon is easier on the fingers.  The nylon version is $20 cheaper and  reflects my toes better.  Old Hat, would you vote for steel or nylon?

  • Cute. Some itches need to be scratched. lol

  • I was told the same thing.  If you want a guitar make sure you buy a decent one.  I ended up getting a Dean acoustic/electric from the exotica collection.

  • I am all for nylon strings. They really are easier on the fingers.

I have a baby Martin guitar and I love it. It fits in the overhead compartment of airplanes just fine. It sounds pretty good too. What you lose with the junior guitars is base. I picked the Martin over the baby Taylor because it just sounded so much fuller and less treble-y. I may have made that word up. Sorry.

I love having a guitar, a good guitar, even when I am not playing it much. I am all for the idea.

    Enjoy!

  • @My_HAT_is_older_than_you - Thanks for your input.  I will try them both out again.  The tuning on the nylon stringer did not seem quite accurate to me.

  • your brother Steve might have an opinion on this subject. He is really into guitars. He has several.

  • You have to replace nylon more often in my experience. That can factor into the cost as well.

  • Go for the steel. Better sound is worth finger callouses if you keep up with it.
Also, I'd recommend a 2nd hand Fender or something, just make sure you can strum it before you buy it.

  • @Ufbad - Thanks for the advice.  I'll keep checking!
