July 14, 2010 Takatori Kiln
Today Dotter and I are going to Takatori Kiln in Nishijin, Fukuoka, not far from where we are living. It's so close we can even take a stroll. These are all Dotter's pics. You can click here to see another earlier visit to this kiln.
Chuchu is going to stay home and watch the house for us. It looks like he found something to do with an octopus toy that he befriended.
Let's head down Nishijin Shotengai Shopping street. This is a very old street and during the day there are ladies with pushcarts selling flowers and vegetables.
This place looks interesting. Let's go in for a look.
I like the blue cups in the rack in front of the store. The price is right, so one is going home with me.
These bowls are Takatori Ware. They were made just a short walk away, so let's to the kiln for a look.
Here is a map of the place. We have come in from the street on the left. That brown thing that looks like a giant caterpillar is a kiln.
Buildings on the kiln property
This is the caterpillar, I mean the kiln. It is not actually used anymore, because a neighborhood has grown up around it and the zoning regulations don't allow all of the smoke that would be produced.
Pottery waiting to be fired in the gas kiln that is somewhere else on the premises.
A small museum/shop. If you have to ask you probably can't afford it.
SHARDS!
Some old pieces
Takatori Ware reminds me of Karatsu Ware, but the clay and glaze of Takatori Ware is smoother. I like this "chocolate melting over vanilla" look.
a $5000 price tag
The front of the old kiln
Ready to bake
a small shrine on the premises to the god of the kiln
We get a glance of Fukuoka Towerfrom a side street.
We saw this in a fabric shop on the way back.
It's about time you got home!! ME wear THAT? No way, Jose!!!
