  • July 16, 2010 Karatsu Yaki

Dotter was visiting us in Fukuoka, and we were able to get around to some different pottery places.  Bunny Chuchu is going to stay home with his beloved octopus while we enjoy a day in Karatsu.

This was a showroom called Arupino in the city of Karatsu just outside of the train station.  There was so much that I wanted to bring home, but did not have that much money.  I just love the glaze when it is dripped down like melting ice cream over chocolate.  Bear with me while I put some of the showroom on display.

    More Water Jars

Plate with design drawn in iron glaze

    Wild cup!

Cup done in Oribe style green/black/white glaze

You can paint your own designs on cups, have them fired and then delivered to your door.  Dotter is good at that sort of thing, and designs a couple of cups with a bunny (what else??) motif.

Here is another shop in Karatsu that I like.  It's in the shopping arcade in front of the train station.

Dotter did a bit of exploring o her own.  This shop specializes in tea ceremony equipment, and is too pricey for my wallet.

She managed to find a kiln or two.

    ...and shards!

    Follow the pottery road!
