Phototopsis - NOT
Today was a concert at Tama Center. The program consisted of a couple of pieces by a composer named Zimmerman, Phototopsis and something else. It was nothing but random noise, and the only word that came to my mind was perversion, in that it was a perverted use of an orchestra. An orchestra is supposed to be used for high expressions of beauty in sound, not mindless racket. Zimmerman committed suicide two years after writing Phototopsis, if that is any commentary on his work. Knitting needles were passed out at the door so you could stab your ears out after the first ten minutes if you made it that far. Thank goodness that the second half of the program was Beethoven!
