  • Mt. Fuji Found 1/2/2003

(edit:  These pictures were taken when we lived in Shinjuku.)

After the Imperial visit, we decided to give Mt. Fuji another try.  It cannot be seen except under proper weather  conditions, of course, and now that we had one mission accomplished, we decided to strike while the sky was clear.  We would have had the perfect spot at the Tokyo Capitol Building, but the free observation area was closed for the holidays, so we headed for the Sunshine Building in Ikebukuro.  We discovered that although not gratis, for a modest fee of $5.00 an head one can enjoy a view the entire city from a 60 stories up that is not blocked by other skyscrapers.  There is also an outside upper observation deck where one can enjoy a view not blocked by fingerprinted windows.

"Shinjuku Station" was taken from a vantage point near, well, Shinjuku Station, and faces in the direction of Ikebukuro.  To give an idea of distance, I could probably bike from where I took the picture to the Sunshine Building in under an hour.  I have indicated the Sunshine Building, as well as where we presently live just on the other side of the building indicated by the second arrow.  It ain't as bad as it looks, because we are actually next to an unseen park and there is nothing but green outside my fingerprinted windows.

So, here is Mt. Fuji from the upper deck of the Ikebukuro Sunshine Building!  It is a bit faint, but clearly visible.

As the afternoon wore on, we thought that it might be worth it to hang around for a bit as the sun sets in Tokyo at around 4:30.
